As you know (if you follow me on social media: Instagram and Tik Tok), I’ve moved to New York City, Brooklyn specifically. It’s been a challenging start, but I am thankful for this life milestone.

With this new apartment, I want to be mindful of the stuff I bring in since it is smaller than my previous Seattle apartment. Luckily, it’s newly renovated, so there are no big changes that need to be done. There are AC units, a washer and dryer in-unit, and a ton of light coming in from the window, a balcony, so I am super thankful because those are all considered as luxury in New York.

In this post, I’m going to review my new Avocado mattress and pillows.

Materials

Avocado’s green mattresses and bedding are certified organic and non-toxic. They’re made with natural and organic materials from sustainably harvested sources. And most products are GREENGUARD Gold Certified and MADE SAFE certified.

  • WOOL – 100% GOTS organic and OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified wool from a farmers’ society Avocado co-owns in the foothills of the Indian Himalayas.

  • COTTON – 100% GOTS organic certified cotton from India, grown without harmful chemicals and produces 46% less carbon dioxide, and uses 90% less water to grow.

  • LATEX – 100% GOLS organic certified latex rubber foam aka Dunlop latex, sourced from farmers’ collectives and processed in a facility in India, operating under the USDA National Organic Program that avocado co-owns. Dunlop Latex is 100% natural, minimally processed, and extremely durable material. It offers temperature control. Lastly, it is not a blend of synthetic, blended, or petroleum-based polyurethane foam.

This is a spring mattress. Try Latex Mattress if you’re looking for a mattress without springs.

Check out Avocado Vegan Mattress that is made without wool, PETA-approved, if you’re looking for a vegan option.

While waiting for my mattress to be shipped, I learn from Avocado’s marketing team that every mattress at Avocado is “made fresh per order,” so the mattress will take a longer time to arrive. It’s part of how Avocado can keep their production so sustainable and less waste.

I received my mattress in about 2 weeks after placing the order, and I was notified a day in advance of its arrival. The delivery team was kind enough to carry the heavy box up to my apartment door.

It was as easy as cutting open the box and remove the plastic wrap. Then I let it expand for a day before sleeping on it. My initial reaction was that it’s a firm but quite bouncy mattress. It’s quite fun jumping on it as well. The Pillowtop definitely adds more softness, perfect for what I’m looking for in a mattress.

2-WEEK REVIEW:

I am a back and side sleeper, and my partner sleeps on his stomach most nights. We’re both super happy about the mattress and have really enjoyed sleeping on it. Compared to our previous memory foam mattress, the Avocado Green Mattress is so much better. No night sweat. No back, hip, or shoulder pain. It feels sturdy, supportive, and soft on top (thanks to the added Pillowtop).

I love a low-profile bed, so I don’t mind having my Avocado mattress on the ground. It’s 13 inches high. I know it’s suggested to have a sturdy frame underneath, so I’ll pick a frame up pretty soon.

2-YEAR REVIEW

It’s An here, doing the two-year check-in. I still sleep on my mattress, love it, and recommend it. The added pillowtop for sure helps making it extra comfy. I have a bed frame and cute bedding, and it’s definitely a game-changer. I love my bed.

I’m moving to a new apartment soon, and I’m glad I have movers’ help otherwise it would be extremely difficult to move this mattress with the added pillow top.

2. Avocado Green Pillow

Avocado Green Pillow is made from GOLS organic certified latex rubber foam ribbons and GOTS organic certified kapok. Kapok is a softer, lighter, and vegan alternative to down. Kapok fiber is smooth like silk but fluffy like cotton and offers an eco-conscious option for pillow stuffing.

  • There are 3 sizes available, Standard, Queen, and King. Mine is the Queen size ($99, 19″ x 29″ — 3.9 lbs.)

  • Comes with a bag of extra filling for customized firmness.

  • Pillow fillings are inside a zippered liner inside of the 100% GOTS organic certified quilted cotton cover is machine washable. Hang dry.

    MADE SAFE® Certified.

2-WEEK REVIEW

Avocado Green Pillow is unlike any pillows that I’ve had before. Materials are unique, and the pillow feels quite firm. I love that I have the option to add more fillings and customize it however I want. As mentioned, I’m a back-and-side sleeper and have been gravitating toward this pillow a lot at the beginning because my other Avocado Molded Latex pillow is flatter. The reasons are because the Green Pillow’s got good height and no weird smell.

After 2 weeks, I think the materials used in the Green pillow are a little too hard, especially in the back of my neck and head, so my partner is currently taking it over. He is a stomach sleeper and said that he would prefer more height. I will add the extra fillings and report back to you soon.

2-YEAR REVIEW

It turns out that this pillow’s material is a bit too hard, and I use it as a decorated pillow to support my back whenever I sit on my bed.

3. Avocado Molded Latex Pillow

Molded Latex Pillow is specifically designed for back and side sleepers. Mine is the Queen size (27.5” L x 17.5” W, 5.1 lbs., 5-inch height).

2-WEEK REVIEW

I didn’t like the Molded Latex Pillow at first because it’s too flat, too soft, and has a rubbery smell. It came in the mail first before my Green mattress and Green pillow arrived, so I did try sleeping with it on the ground and didn’t like it.

Then about a week after sleeping on the Green mattress and Green Pillow, I decided to try it and fell in love instantly. And have been sleeping with it on my Avocado Green Mattress ever since.

Currently, the Molded Latex Pillow is my favorite pillow to sleep on my Avocado Green Mattress. Even though I wish it’s got a little bit more height, but I love how it’s so soft and malleable. I don’t experience the uncomfortable back of the neck feeling anymore, and I’m super happy that I’ve finally found a favorite sleeping situation.

After 2 weeks, I no longer notice the rubbery latex smell, and I highly recommend picking one up if you’re a back and side sleeper like me.

2-YEAR REVIEW

This pillow is still the main pillow that I sleep on, and I love it. I have this silk pillowcase, and the pair is my sleep staple for 2 years now.

Final thoughts: Is the Avocado mattress worth it?

Personally, I’m in the stage of my life where I am ready to make big purchases that I know will last from brands that I love. As an apartment renter, there are tons of factors that will dictate what my purchase decision is, however, I’m all about the quality, materials, and design. With a mattress, it’s something that I don’t want to have to replace after years and years. And that means I don’t mind investing in a good mattress that is made from high-quality materials, durable, and lasts.

At my Seattle apartment in which I had lived for 4 years, I was fine with this memory foam mattress. With the big move across the country, I decided to not move any furniture, sold, and gave most things away. And of course, I had to give away that mattress for free. It’s affordable and works for the first mattress, but I wouldn’t repurchase it. Before getting Avocado, I was so close to getting this mattress (use this link to sign up to earn cashback).

Mattresses, in general, are extremely hard to resell or give away because of sanitary reasons. It’s wasteful and expensive to move or discard it, so I highly recommend doing careful research and reading reviews. Go to a nearby mattress store, try things at the store, and ask a lot of questions. With online purchases, make sure to read a lot of reviews. I’m happy that I’ve gone with the Green Mattress, and both Green Pillow and Molded Latex Pillow make it the best bedding situation I’ve ever owned.

Lastly, I hope that this review helps you in making a decision about Avocado products. I might be biased since I’m affiliated with Avocado, but I wholeheartedly love my mattress and pillows and will continue to tell everyone about them.

Make sure to check back on this blog post often as I will be updating my review after a few months and a year or two years of sleeping trial.
